Veterinary Management Institute

VMI consists of four integrated management modules, each comprising three days of instruction. Participants will receive pre-session reading materials and assignments to complete prior to their arrival on campus. Participants should anticipate evening group study and case preparation assignments.

Human Resource Management

  • Thursday - 5:00 pm -Orientation followed by "Welcome Dinner"
  • Friday - 8:30 am - Sessions

  • Sunday - 8:30 am - Sessions until 2:00 pm

Financial Management

  • Review financial and managerial accounting
  • Set meaningful financial goals and measure financial performance
  • Make effective financial decisions that affect your practice, such as when to invest in new equipment
  • Create value in your practice
  • Successfully grow your practice

Marketing Management

  • Evaluate your practice's mission and objectives
  • Understand the buying behavior of your clients
  • Maximize your marketing dollars by targeting the audience you can best serve
  • Accurately evaluate the success of your marketing efforts
  • Receive valuable demographic information keyed to the ZIP codes where you practice — free of charge

Strategic Thinking

Please Note: At least TWO other VMI Modules must be completed before Strategic Thinking.

  • Develop a strategic planning tool kit tailored to your practice with useful guides and models
  • Learn a more integrated way of thinking about your goals, strengths and weaknesses

Faculty

Faculty of Purdue University’s Krannert Graduate School of Management serve as the primary instructors for VMI and were selected for their academic expertise as well as their professional experience in business and industry. These faculty members are graduate-level business school professors with years of experience.

Richard Goebel, DVM, is special assistant to the dean at Purdue’s School of Veterinary Medicine, president and hospital co-director of Magrane Pet Medical Center in Mishawaka, IN, and president of Simmons and Associates Great Lakes Inc., a veterinary practice brokerage, appraisal and management consulting firm. He is former director of Purdue’s veterinary teaching hospital and recipient of Practitioner of the Year Award from AAHA, given for outstanding contributions to the profession and the community.

Logan Jordan, PhD, is associate dean at the Krannert School, where his responsibilities include much of the school’s infrastructure and support services operations. His academic area is strategic management, including the management of innovation and technology. He has taught in the Krannert School’s undergraduate, master’s and executive programs, including management development programs for Lucent and Case Corporation.

Dan McQuiston, PhD, is director of executive education and an associate professor of management at Butler University in Indianapolis. His expertise includes marketing management, industrial marketing, marketing decision making and customer service. He brings a range of industrial and consulting experience to his teaching, which includes extensive participation in the Krannert School’s degree and non-degree executive programs.

F. David Schoorman, PhD, is a professor of organization behavior and human resource management. His teaching interests encompass organizational behavior, organizational theory and research methods. He has served as a consultant for the Government Employees Insurance Corporation (GEICO), NASA and Southwestern Bell Telephone.

Charlene Sullivan, PhD, is an associate professor of management at the Krannert School. She teaches corporate finance and financial accounting and has won multiple undergraduate and graduate teaching awards. She is also a faculty associate with the Dauch Center for the Management of Manufacturing Enterprises, where she conducts studies of cost management systems and capital budgeting practices for national and international manufacturing firms.

Local Administrators

VMI participants can count on Purdue’s dedicated professional staff to see them through the entire program experience — from receipt of pre-program materials to seamless client-focused administration and hospitality while on campus to graduation and beyond.

Cathy Garrison is program manager of Krannert Executive Education Programs (KEEP) at Purdue’s Krannert School. Her responsibilities include the management of KEEP’s non-degree programs, German partner executive degree programs and scheduling of all degree and non-degree executive offerings. Cathy’s legendary client-focus skills exemplify the bond between KEEP and its valued program participants.
